Most of the institutes offer support for predoctoral students; those institutes specifically listed include NIA, NIAAA, NIDA, NIDCD, NIMH, NINDS, NINR, NIBIB and ODS. The programs objective is to provide support for promising doctoral candidates (Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent) who will be performing dissertation research and training in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH entities.  There are also solicitations aimed specifically at increasing diversity.

National Development and Research Institutes:
This Predoctoral program supports behavioral scientists in conducting their dissertation research and pursuing scientific careers in the areas of drug use/misuse and HIV/AIDS.

American Heart Association Southeast Affiliate
Predoctoral program objective is to help students initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research by providing research assistance and training. The focus is on research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems.  All basic science disciplines as well as epidemiological, community and clinical investigations that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems are eligible.

Association for Women in Science
awards 5-10 graduate fellowships in the amount of $1,000 each year.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship program

PhRMA Foundation
The mission of the PhRMA Foundation is to support young scientists in disciplines important to the pharmaceutical industry by awarding competitive research fellowships and grants at a critical decision point at the outset of their careers.
